S T A T E M E N T Colour is the principle element in my paintings. Sometimes, but not always, a painting starts from my observations. Frantically undertaken drawings and colour references are made in situ - my own form of shorthand - to serve merely as prompts. More often, memory of a place, or experience, gives direction to the painting. Shapes emerge and colours interact to recapture the immediacy of that initial sensation. Paintings are often undertaken on the floor and I make inroads from all four sides with a combination of quick dynamic brush strokes and gestural movements. Pouring and smearing the paint, layering glazes of ink, scratching back or dispersing paint with bleach provide a multi layered surface variation. Stimulated by the abstract qualities presented by the landscape my work is becoming increasingly intuitive; moving away from subject matter and not anchored by a particular place.
